You have been invited to the table with the King!!!

One of the sweetest things since being on the race has been eating meals with my squad! We are almost always gathered around the table.

The table represents so much. We eat and drink, talk and fellowship, laugh and cry around the table. The table is filled with all sorts of different things. It is a place of peace and fellowship, joy and laughter, prayers and encouragement, wonder and hope.

There are so many different occasions that tables are used for. They see the birthday celebrations, the thanksgiving feasts, the casual lunch on a Saturday afternoon, the game night laughter, early morning breakfast, coffee time, and the countless conversations of sharing stories and experiences. Tables hold the beauty of fellowship and are witnesses of communion.

Jesus had a tendency to recline at tables. He sat with all sorts of people, the tax collectors, Pharisees, fisherman, doctors, widows, children, and the outcasts. It was a common sight to see Him sitting at a table. I don’t think this is a coincidence, because Jesus came to bring us back to the table with God!

When looking throughout the Bible tables are symbols of communion and fellowship. The most common thing we do around a table is eat. When the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt and lead them through the wilderness He provided their daily bread for them to eat (Exodus 16). He was their provider and protector and they were dependent on Him for everything. He was preparing a table before them in the presence of their enemies (Psalm 23:5).  In Exodus 25 as the Lord was giving instructions on how to build the tabernacle (the place His presence would dwell), the second item He commanded to be made was the table for the showbread!! The table was beautifully constructed and carefully designed as a symbolic message of God’s presence with and provision for His people.

Jesus is John 6:35 says “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” The table in the Old Testament was a reflection of what was to come! The wood table would be replaced with a wooden cross and the bread would be our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ.

The presence of God is before us, it isn’t only a future reality, but it is a present reality that we can choose to fix our eyes on! God always wanted to dwell with us (Exodus 6:6-8), His desire was for us to be His people and for Him to be our God! Through what Jesus has done on the cross was can now enter into communion with Him again.

Jesus talks about the new covenant in Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭26‬-28‬,

“And as they were eating,  Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

There is a cost to this precious communion, Jesus payed the price and became the bread and the wine and prepared a table before us! The gospel is an invitation to come and dine with the King! To come and sit at His table and rejoice and delight in His presence forevermore.

Once we come to the table, we are called to go and tell the whole world that they too have been invited to the table, invited to the celebration and feast (Matthew 22)!!!!

Will you choose today to come to the table?

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Revelation‬ ‭3‬:‭20‬ ‭

“And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.” Revelation‬ ‭21‬:‭3‬ ‭

It’s been one of the biggest blessing being here is Eswatini and seeing Gods heart for His children all around the world. God is always on the move and is working even when we don’t see it. Keep being loved by God and loving His people!!! I love y’all!!!

Prayer

Jesus, you have invited me to the table. The food purchased with your blood, the most costly price. You have invited me to the table where we feast on your love, joy, peace, and hope. I don’t deserve it but You give it to me anyway, the seat is before me. I choose to sit and dine with you my King. Lord we praise you because you are so kind and gracious towards us! I pray that just as you have invited us we would so go and invite others. Lord we long for the day that we will sit at your table surrounded by the saints and celebrate in your presence forever!!!!

Amen

  2. Oh. Sweet Emily! What a beautiful reminder to all of us that Jesus is daily inviting us to His table. He is our daily bread! Your words of truth of our loving Father are a beautiful reminder to surrender all to Him and come to his table. Sending all my love.

  3. Emily, this is a deep reflection, so beautifully expressed. That which God instructed in the Old Testament, the Tabernacle and table for the showbread, remains. Fulfilled not forgotten. Jesus waits for us daily at the Supper of the Lamb, His everlasting gift of sacrificial love.
May God continue to bless you. It’s a lovely journey you are on.
